More Information
- History/Legend of the Temple Legend has it that Goddess Kamakshi settled in this temple after destroying the demon Bhandasura, who was created from the ashes of Manmatha, the god of love. She performed a penance on a fire pit to please Lord Shiva, who appeared before her and married her. It is believed that Kamakshi was originally a Ugra Swaroopini. Adi Sankara personified her as the Shanta Swaroopini after establishing the Sri Chakra.According to legend, the presence of the Ugra Swaroopini could be felt outside the temple grounds during Adi Sankara's reign. Shankaracharya had asked that she not leave the temple complex. Symbolic of this, the festival image of Kamakshi departs from Shankaracharya at his shrine in the inner Parakram each time she is led out for a procession.
