- History/Legend of the Temple Indiran and Budhan are believed to worship Lord Shiva at this shrine. One of the legends revolves around planets. According to the narrative, Chandra (the moon) fell in love with Guru's (Jupiter) wife, Dhara. Chandra held a Yagna for Maha Vishnu in which Guru and his wife Dhara took part. Chandra made Dhara stay with him. Budhan (Mercury) was born to them. Budhan felt ashamed of his birth when he learnt this. So he travelled to Kanchipuram to worship Lord Shiva. Satisfied with his devotion, Lord Shiva bestowed upon him the status of Navagraha as a boon. In another legend, Indra, who can take different forms, fell in love with Ahalya, the wife of Sage Gautama. Indra came to the ashram and gave the morning call in the form of a rooster, and Gautama Maharishi went to the river to take a bath. In the meantime, Indra assumed the form of Gautama Maharishi and attained Ahalya. After taking a bath, Sage Gautama detected Indra's misbehaviour. Indra disguised himself as a cat and fled the Ashram as he entered it. Sage Gautama cursed Ahalya, turned him to stone, and made Indra look all over his body. To break the curse, Indra travelled to Kanchipuram and worshipped Lord Shiva, Sri Sathyanatheswarar of this temple.
