More Information
- History/Legend of the Temple Believed to have been originally constructed during the Pallava era, approximately 1,300 years ago, the temple underwent substantial reconstruction in stone during the Chola period. The architecture reflects the styles prevalent during these dynasties, with several stone inscriptions on the outer walls of the sanctum sanctorum attesting to its antiquity. According to local legend, during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), a deadly poison, Halahala, emerged, threatening the cosmos. To protect creation, Lord Shiva consumed the poison, which turned his throat blue, earning him the name Neelakantha (the blue-throated one). Recognizing this sacrificial act, the Devas (celestial beings) installed a Shiva Linga at this site and worshipped him, leading to the deity being known as Manikandeswarar. The temple is west-facing with an entrance from the south, encompassing a spacious single prakaram (outer courtyard) that houses all the shrines and deities. A notable feature is the depiction of Dakshinamurthy facing the Navagraha (nine planetary deities), which is considered significant. The temple also includes a tank on the eastern side and an imposing Vimanam (temple tower). The temple observes daily rituals and celebrates festivals such as Sani Pradosham, which is performed with great fervor, attracting numerous devotees seeking relief from the malefic effects of Saturn.
