More Information
- History/Legend of the Temple The name Metraleeswarar is derived from the word “Metra,” which is interpreted as "friend" or "companion" in Tamil. According to the legend, it is said that a devotee (possibly a sage or a common man) once prayed to Lord Shiva in this very place for relief from his suffering or to obtain blessings for his devotion. Shiva, in his compassion, appeared before the devotee. The devotee, overwhelmed by the divine presence, offered a deep prayer to Lord Shiva, calling him his “metra” or friend, asking for his guidance and protection. Lord Shiva, pleased by this pure devotion, blessed him and assured him that he would be a constant companion to the devotee through all challenges. Thus, the temple came to be known as Metraleeswarar, signifying the idea of Lord Shiva as the eternal friend and protector. The deity is worshipped as a friend and companion to those who seek his grace, a divine friend who never forsakes his devotees.
