- History/Legend of the Temple Kumbakonam is home to the Lord Shiva temple known as Kasi Viswanathan, which dates back to the Ramayana. While searching for Sita, Lord Rama and Lakshmana encountered Sage Agasthya, who suggested that Lord Rama worship Lord Shiva at the Kasi Vishwanathar temple in Kumbakonam in order to train as a warrior and battle Ravana. Following Agasthya's advice, Lord Rama was able to fulfill his goal. It is also thought that Lord Shiva was worshipped in Banaras beside nine of India's sacred rivers in order to atone for the sins that bathers had committed there.
