- History/Legend of the Temple According to Hindu legend, Vishnu, disguised as a tortoise (known as Karkada), worshipped Shiva at this location in order to acquire heavenly ambrosia. According to mythology, the location was originally called Kascapavoor, which later became Kachoor, and the ruling deity, Shiva, became known as Karchabeswarar. According to another mythology, Vishnu arrived in the shape of Matsya from the Ocean of Milk to assist the Devas. Vishnu appeared at this location, built a spring, bathed, and prayed to Shiva here. Since Shiva assisted Vishnu, the location became known as Tirukachur.According to a third legend, Indra, the monarch of celestial deities, contracted an illness that couldn't be healed by celestial medics. Even the celestial Ashwini Devas were unable to cure the ailment. Sage Narada encouraged them to worship Shiva, and they were able to identify herbs that could cure the ailment. Indra was cured with the herb, but they were unable to locate where they discovered it in the dirt. They prayed to Parvati, who appeared as Irulneeki Amman (the one who clears darkness) and guided them to the location.Scholars believe the temple has existed since the 8th century, under the reign of Sundarar, a well-known Saiva Nayanar. Sundarar's lines in the 11th Tirumurai of Thevaram praise the temple.
