- History/Legend of the Temple According to Hindu mythology, a demon named Vallan caused difficulties for the Devas, or celestial deities. The Devas sought assistance from Murugan, who informed them that the moment had arrived to eliminate the monster. Murugan fought and slew the demon at this location, naming it Vallan Kottai, which means 'Fort of Vallan'.Indra, the King of the Devas, asked his Guru Brihaspathi to choose a location for him to worship Murugan. Brihaspathi recommended Vallakottai. Indra arrived in Vallakottai, pierced the earth with his weapon Vajrayudha to make a tank, and offered ablution to the image of Murugan, fulfilling his demands. The temple tank is called Vajra Theertha.Another legend talks about a monarch named Bhagiratha who ruled the Elanji kingdom. He was arrogant towards sage Naratha, which enraged a demon king named Goran, who attacked Elanji. Bhagiratha lost the battle and sought guidance from Naratha, who referred him to the Sage Durvasa. Durvasa encouraged him to return to Vallakottai and worship Murugan in order to restore his kingdom. Bhagiratha worshiped Murugan and erected the temple.
