The temple is thought to be around 2000 years old, as it appears in ancient Tamil literature from the Sangam period. The Cholas, a strong dynasty in South India, established the temple, which was then repaired and expanded by the Pandya's, Hoysala's, Vijayanagaras, and Madurai Nayaks. The temple has experienced many historical events and changes, and it has been visited by numerous kings, saints, and poets. The temple's history and name are based on a fascinating narrative. According to the narrative, a cowherd observed that one of his cows wasn't producing milk. He followed the cow and discovered that it was dropping milk on a Swayambhu Lingam, a self-manifested incarnation of Lord Shiva located beneath a Punnai tree. The cowherd attempted to stop the cow, but the Lingam became injured and began bleeding. The cowherd was horrified and fled to the king, who arrived at the scene with his troops.
