More Information
- History/Legend of the Temple The town of Kumbakonam is located 40 kilometers northeast of Thanjavur and 60 kilometers inland from the Tamil Nadu coast. It is bordered to the north by the Kaveri River and to the south by the Arasalar River. The Shri Vedanarayana Perumal Temple, a wonderful example of Brahma worship, is situated there. The most crucial thing to remember is that Bramha's concealed fourth face—that of Gayathri Devi—is her own. To allow Bramha to do the yagna, she finishes his unfinished kandith face. A Sadhaka's Darshan of this Gayathri visage brings Sakshathkar. The temple has three sanctum sanctorum's: the first is dedicated to Lord Brahma, who is standing with His consorts, Mother Saraswathi and Mother Gayatri, asking for Lord Vedanarayana Perumal's blessings; the second is dedicated to Lord Veda Narayana Perumal, who is accompanied by His consorts, Mothers Sridevi and Bhoodevi; and the third is dedicated to Lord Yoga Narasimha, who is accompanied by His two consorts. As a result, devotees in the temple might get darshan of three Lords. The temple provides Brahma Sankalpa Puja, which is a prayer for advancement in trade and education. Before enabling children to attend school, devotees perform special pujas for Mothers Saraswathi and Gayatri, as well as Lord Brahma. Thursdays are dedicated to extraordinary pujas. On Fridays, prayers are presented to Mother Mahalakshmi, and on Saturdays, prayers are offered to Perumal, both seeking debt relief. Devotees pray to Lord Yoga Narasimha on their 60th, 70th, and 80th birthdays in the hopes of achieving longevity. Although some identify to it as a Visnu temple, it has long been a Brahma temple. Kumbakonam appears on all of the "short lists" of unusual Brahma temples in India. It has numerous names, including the Bramman Temple, Brahman Kovil, and Vedanarayana Perumal Temple. The temple is located on Pattunoolkara (silk weaver) Street, near the Mahamaham tank. Only one of Kumbakonam's 17 prominent temples, the Vedanarayana Perumal, is dedicated to Brahmadeva worship; the remaining five are Saivite. In general, the temples in the heart of Kumbakonam date back to the Chola era, whilst those outside the city are more modern, having been erected by the Naik kings. Sri Vedanarayana Perumal Temple is an example of the latter. In the seventh century, Kumbakonam served as the Cholas' capital.
