- History/Legend of the Temple It is said that Sage Vyasa installed and worshipped the Shiva Lingam of this temple, as ordered by Maha Vishnu, in order to break Shri Siva's Vahana Rishaba curse. In another legend, the Kalinga Desa King worshipped Shiva at this temple to heal his wife of a long-term ailment, as suggested by a Sage. He came to this temple with his wife to worship Shiva and Ambal. It was said that the Kalinga King built part of the temple. This temple is also associated with the legend of Amrit Kalasa, who visited Kumbakonam and was shot by Shiva. Shiva is known as Banapureeswarar because the kalasa or Banai floats here.
