- History/Legend of the Temple The Brahmanda Purana, a Hindu text, mentions the temple's legend. In order to become closer to the divine Vishnu, Tulasi once performed penance. In response, Vishnu said that in Tiruvinnagaram, his consort Lakshmi will show herself beneath Tulasi's lap. In the location of the temple, Tulasi manifested as a plant. The 53rd stanza of Nammazhwaar in Thiruviruththam makes reference to this. Worshiping Vishnu, the sage Markandeya wished to have Vishnu as his son-in-law and Lakshmi as his daughter. Markandeya once believed that Thiruvinnagaram was the ideal location to fulfill his wish while on a religious pilgrimage. In order to obtain Lakshmi's blessings, Markandeya began a rigorous penance that lasted for a thousand years. When Lakshmi was a newborn, she emerged beneath the Tulasi plant. The infant was raised by Markandeya, who identified her as Lakshmi. On the panguni month of Shravana, when the little girl had reached adolescence, Vishnu showed up as an elderly man and asked her to marry him. replied, "You are very ripe and old, my daughter is too young and she does not even know how to cook with proper salt contents" , to which the elderly gentleman responded, "If your daughter must cook without salt, then I will still take it as my best food, but I will not leave from here without marrying her" . After asking Vishnu for assistance, Markandeya discovered through his penance that the elderly man was actually Vishnu. He opened his eyes to see Vishnu in his actual cosmic form. Vishnu wedded Markandeya's daughter. According to the tale, salt is never used in the preparation of the temple's Neyvethiyam (food offering). This narrative gave rise to the moniker Oppiliappan.
