- History/Legend of the Temple The temple's primary deity is Lord Shiva. This temple dates back about two millennia. According to history, Yamaraja prayed and dedicated a shivalingam here in order to be released from Lord Shiva's punishment. The temple was given the name Kaalakaaleswarar temple because Shiva is believed to be the master of Yama (Kalan).Located near Kovilpalayam on the banks of the Kousika River, the Kaalakaleshwara Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva, was constructed by the Cholas in the eighth century A.D.It is thought that the Dakshinamoorthy statue in this temple is the biggest one in Asia.
