- History/Legend of the Temple This area used to be entirely covered with rainforest. The location was known as "Malathivanam."Dhoomakedhu, a sage, once lived in the adjoining village of Udayagiri. While deciding which shrine would best offer him divinity, Dhoomakedhu concluded he needed to visit Kumbakonam. When Dhoomakedhu arrived in Malathivanam, he noticed the temple's Shiva Linga. He also saw a bathing tank at the site. He stayed there for several days, always worshiping Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva granted Dhoomakedhu a blessing in recognition of his devotion and spirituality. Dhoomakedhu requested that Lord Shiva bestow the goddess Ananda Valli and the god Viswanathar.In addition, he requested that his name be put to the temple tank. Lord Shiva informed Dhoomakedhu that he would supply the names at his request.
