More Information
- History/Legend of the Temple The term "Marudhachalapathy" means "Lord of Hills" and refers to the abundance of Marudha trees. The name itself has a mythological origin. A Siddha, exhausted by thirst and exhaustion, sought refuge under the shade of a Marudha tree and begged to the mercy of Lord Muruga for a shower of water, which appeared as if by miracle from beneath the tree! As water streamed from the roots of the Marudha tree, the Siddha leaped in pleasure, worshiping Muruga as the Lord of "Marudha" and "Jalam." Over time, "Marudhajalapathi" became "Marudhachalapathy." The temple's history may be traced back to ancient publications like Sage Kachiappar's Perur Puranam. The temple's origins can be traced back to the age of Surapadma, the demon vanquished by Lord Subramanya, as described in Skandapuranam. The inscriptions discovered in Tiru Muruganatha Swami Temple, Tiru Murugan Poondi date the temple's foundation to the 12th century A.D. Kongu Nadu was once divided into 24 sections. It is learnt that one such Arai Nadu in the west has its border in the Marudhamalai Hills. The Pambatti Siddhar Sanctuary is located in a cave between the towering cliffs. The famous sage is shown with a magudi (a wind instrument intended to lure snakes) in his right hand and a stick in his left. Shivalingam and Nagar idols may be found around the sanctuary. Following the puja for Lord Murugan, a separate puja is held for Pambatti Siddhar. According to Hindu legend, Pambatti Siddhar continues to worship Lord Murugan in this sanctuary. Every day, devotees pour milk into a bowl in his sanctuary, and the milk level is supposed to drop the next day, suggesting that Siddhar has anointed the milk with Lord Murugan as a gesture of devotion. This rite is seen as a witness to Pambatti Siddhar's continued respect and worship of Lord Murugan.
