More Information

  • History/Legend of the Temple When the Pralaya floods destroyed the world, Lord Brahma sat in despair, unsure of how or where to restart creation. He sought advice from Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva advised the Creator to visit as many sacred locations as possible, gather the sands of the spots, blend nectar, and create a magical pot. Place the Srushti Beeja (creation seed) in the pot, top with a coconut, and dress it (alankara) with mango leaves and threads circled on the pot. It should then be carefully placed on a hanging cradle - Uri in Tamil - so that it does not wobble and tumble into the floods. The pot should next be worshipped with Vilwa leaves while chanting Shiva chants. The pot would travel southward. Explaining what Brahmma should do, Lord Shiva told him that He would appear at the location where the Kumba was floating. The coconut burst into pieces, revealing Lord Shiva as Abhimukheswara. Abhi Mukham means "straight look." The temple faces directly at the Maha Magam tank.
