- History/Legend of the Temple The Kottaiyur Kodeeswarar Temple has an interesting mythology about Suruchi, the son of Sathyarthi, the monarch of Trihartha kingdom. Suruchi was infamous for his brutal and naughty treatment of his subjects. As a result, he was cursed by a sage and became a devil. Suruchi was embarrassed by his appearance and prayed to Shiva for aid. Shiva appeared and instructed him to take a holy plunge in the temple's spring. Suruchi took Shiva's advice and was able to reclaim his previous form. Even now, the spring in the temple is thought to have the ability to heal abnormalities. Women take a holy plunge in the spring to improve their looks. Another mythology related with the temple is that the sage Hernander (Athreya) worshipped Shiva here. The goddess Pandhadu Nayagi, who is said to lift devotees' curses and alleviate their suffering, was named after this temple.
